A teacher’s classroom is in many ways like a very specialized office and like any office you need various equipment and stationary for it: except the variety of things a teacher needs in a class for a year is quite huge especially when you consider teaching is one of only a few jobs where you are doing something different every day on different subjects and with different equipment and other resources.

Many teachers’ resources are things like books and CDs of lesson plans: to help them teach subjects that they may only teach for one day once a year. The best resources are perhaps packs for teachers that bring everything needed for a lesson together and could include posters, work sheets to copy, interactive CDs to use and often flash cards; some packs may even include things like artifacts and objects to show the children or puppets and other aids to help teach a lesson. The resources a teacher uses will to some extent depend on their style but increasingly teachers are having to adapt different styles and types of teaching for different pupils within their classes who learn in different ways: this can put a strain on teachers trying to make sure no child gets left behind. It may be that a few children are more practically minded and like to learn via interaction or that they learn by seeing things in action. The choice of teachers’ resources available though allows teachers to have to hand what they need to teach in a variety of ways that may benefit the whole class as well: as each pupil learns a variety of ways to learn.


Many resources aim to make lessons more interesting for children, and potentially for the teacher as well. Keeping a child’s concentration is always a problem in class but letting children interact with items is a great way to get them involved as is encouraging imagination. Educational toys like electronic toys, science toys and even geography related toys allow children to learn through play and through seeing things in action. As an example a science toy that includes a microscope may allow them to look at insects and therefore understand better what they are and that they are actually animals.

Resources for teachers that encourage imagination include items such as puppets and also dressing up clothes. With puppets teachers can act out stories with puppets to help children understand a subject better or perhaps they could be used in conjunction with a song or nursery rhyme. Dressing up allows children to act out things from their imagination and can be incorporated into lessons where they need to make up a story on a particular subject and act it out, or they could also use puppets for this. By considering a subject in order to act it out children may consider it in more detail and gain better understanding from it as well as demonstrating their understanding as well and allowing a teacher to monitor how children are developing: especially when they may struggle to express themselves in other ways.
